The importance of routines for our housemates

One of the benefits for pet owners of having someone house sit is that it lessens the stress on pets if they can be kept in their own environment, and to their daily routines.

At our current house sit we have two housemates:

Castiel, a ragdoll cat who is affectionate and loving, but has his own routine. He comes and goes during the day - usually at mealtimes - and is then put outside during the night. If you brush him - any number of times a day - he'll love you. He also enjoys cuddles.

Molly, a Maltese, is intelligent and loving, and has the sweetest temperament ever. She's usually not too far away from us, or else stretched out on the tile floor trying to cool off.

Part of Molly's routine is a walk to a nearby lake, a walk at the park and around the lake, and a swim. We've been happy to keep up that routine.

This lake was created in the 1980s, by converting marshland to what is now the last freshwater lake on the Gold Coast. It's frequented daily by those training for triathlons; easily recognizable wearing swim caps and goggles. We also saw families enjoying the small beach area. It's also a lovely place to just take a walk along the shore, although we did swim most days too. A nice sandy bottom and warm water; perfect for me!

For us, not being natives of Australia, we saw many sights that are not common for us. In particular, we saw and heard various varieties of birds.

Greg identified this as an Australian magpie.

He also recognized a Noisy Minor. I checked both on Google and he was right. Way to go, Greg!

This one is a puzzle to us. With its hard red hat, and shiny midnight blue feathers at its front. Maybe our birding friends can help us out with this one.

We also enjoyed plant life that we're not used to seeing. The blooms were just lovely on this plant.

Returning home, Molly faced a hose down, which is not her most favourite thing.

It's been a pleasure being here for the past few days, having a routine that makes us feel somewhat more like locals than tourists. Sadly, tomorrow we move on, but at least the adventure continues!

Notes:
1. We have the permission of the pet owners to post these photos.
2. My thanks to Greg for noticing that yesterday's Airbnb link to this home wasn't correct. I've fixed that, and I'll also add it here: our current home. On the main page, at the bottom left corner of the main photo, click on "view photos". Again, thanks to our homeowners for agreeing to this link being posted.
