Thrombolites are now checked off our bucket list

Our first house sit, three years ago, was in a prestigious gated community in Arizona. Being homebodies, we were content in the beautiful home in a beautiful environment. It felt like we were staying at a 5-star resort. Our homeowners teased us that we really should venture "outside of the compound", as they called it. That saying has stuck with us. Yesterday was a day to venture outside of the compound.

We chose to venture south, at first hugging the coastline as much as possible. We soon left the city and found ourselves on good open roads with very little traffic. Within about half an hour we were near Lake Clifton (bottom left of the map), and Greg saw a sign saying "Thrombolites" and immediately turned down that road. We arrived at the long narrow lake you can see on the map, stretching above and below the Lake Clifton wording.

I had no idea what thrombolites were, but there was enough signage at the site to enlighten me. In this photo, Greg's on a boardwalk that juts out into the lake. The lake stretched as far as we could see in either direction.

This is looking to the left, near the end of the boardwalk, and those rock-like structures are thrombolites. Apparently they are best viewed in late summer and at low tide. Comparing our photos to those on the website for this area (see the link earlier), I think we hit the jackpot for timing!

This photo was taken further along the boardwalk, nearer where the boardwalk turns into the jetty you see here.

So what are they? I'll add one of the signs, as I can't really explain it.

They are listed as "critically endangered" and are only found in a few places in the world, so it was kinda cool to see them.

From there we headed inland and visited a nice cafe in the small town of Waroona (population 2,157). We then headed north to the larger town of Pinjarra (population 4,255) and stopped in a store for what was an unsuccessful attempt at finding the infamous coffee maker.

After a few hours out, we headed home. It was an enjoyable day "outside of the compound".
