How do snowbirds decide when to return home?

Snowbirds come in many varieties, and how they decide when to return home varies with each one, or each couple, as is the case with us.

After our one day of rain here, part of a double rainbow

When we first ventured into what we considered to be snow birding, we spent six weeks in the Dominican Republic, returning home at the end of March. During our first week home, we encountered two four-letter words ... cold & snow. Greg asked that I make our return date later next time.

The following year was our first real snow birding experience - after we realized six weeks didn't qualify as snow birding - and we returned to Niagara mid-April. Nearing the end of our travels, I wrote a post, "Time to go home - we've run out of toothpaste!, and we arrived home April 17th. Better temperatures, but not perfect.

As far as Greg's concerned, given we both prefer warmer weather, the later we return home the better. This morning, at 8:30 am, I suggested we take the dogs for a walk earlier, while the temperature was relatively cool. At the time it was 64ºF, with a expected high of 81ºF. Greg commented that, if we are to soon return home, I need an attitude adjustment, given I think 64ºF is cool. I then checked the Niagara Falls weather, only to find a high of 44ºF scheduled for today. Yikes, that's really cold to me now!

Here's a photo that's currently online in the Niagara Falls Review newspaper. Not inviting, that's for sure!

We finish this house sit in a week, and plan to return home to Canada afterwards. We anticipate we'll arrive home around the 25th of this month. It's later than past years, but the big question is ... is it late enough?

  1. I'm not sure where you got the photo of Niagara Falls, Francine, but the last few days have been gorgeous here! Kids are out without jackets, sun is shining, it is definitely biking weather. And we don't need to walk early to avoid the 81 degree weather -it is great ALL day! We don't really like it in the 80's all the time, people tend to hide indoors in the air conditioning, and spring is amazing here seeing buds come out, grass turning green, and life "springing" up! Sorry you don't like it, but we do!
I took a couple photos a few minutes ago, but don't know how to add them to your blog.
Enjoy the rest of your time in the heat, and see you in our heat soon!

  2. The photo was taken from your online local paper 3 days ago, where they've also reported below-zero temperatures most days over the past week. Maybe it's a ploy to keep us away, but it won't work; we'll be home soon. I'm glad to hear you're out enjoying the spring weather, which I enjoy too.
