Surrounded by nuts in Green Valley

We're enjoying our time in Green Valley, Arizona, USA. Before we arrived, I questioned how anywhere in the desert could be thought of as a green valley. As I was curious about the name, I asked our homeowner.

Green Valley and its neighbouring town, Saguarita, are known for their production of pecans, and when the pecan trees are in leaf they create a green valley at the foot of the Santa Rita mountain range. The trees are not in full leaf yet, but the photo below does show somewhat of a green band already forming below the mountains. Although, there is also a golf course, so one of them could be that!

Some trivia of the area for you. The Green Valley Pecan Company is one of the world's largest growers and processors of pecans, and is the biggest exporter of pecans to Europe. In Niagara's wine country, it's not unusual to drive by rows and rows of grapevines; here in Green Valley, it's similar with pecan trees. These are tall trees; far bigger than the peach trees that were also plentiful in Niagara for many years, before the canning industry moved out of Niagara. The landscape is far more interesting here than I'd expected.

Most days so far we've been to dog parks with our housemates, Maya and Molly. They seem to love going to the park, and get along well with other dogs, which makes life easy for us. We usually get to chat with other dog owners, and inevitably tell our story of house and pet sitting, and hand out our cards. Although we don't know our plans for next year, it's always good to do a little promotion!
