Variety is the spice of life

The photos you'll see in this post were taken on a walk we did in the neighbourhood. These plants are not in people's gardens, but rather are mostly growing wild. Things thrive here in the rainforest!

One of the thing we've become accustomed to with house sitting is being asked to take on responsibilities that are new to us. We're happy to have something to do while house sitting, besides caring for pets, so we're usually ready, willing, and probably able to accommodate requests.

A closer look

In one house sit, we were asked to be the on-site contact for Airbnb guests, which we enjoyed. We greeted the guests, settled them in, and supervised the cleaning.

Yes, those are raindrops on the petals!

At our current sit, we were asked if we'd like to care for their VRBO (vacation rentals by owners) property. Again, we're happy to help.

Our homeowners have a quaint suite in Volcano (VRBO # 500972), a short distance from the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. We visited that park on Christmas Eve, and wrote about it in an earlier post. Between guests, we clean and prepare the unit, and then take care of the laundry at home.

Greg loves this purple flower. We see it growing in many areas along the highway on our way to Volcano.

Our homeowners are grateful for our help. They gave us a gift certificate to Ohelo Cafe in Volcano, and we enjoyed an excellent lunch there on Christmas Eve. Today we used the balance of the gift card and had a delicious pizza. We were fortunate enough to be seated at the chefs table, facing the open cooking area, and it was impressive to watch how the chefs worked in harmony, and with so much attention to detail.

With this last bloom, I was particularly interested in how some of the unopened pods showed as a mauve colour, whereas the majority are red.

So what's next for new tasks, I wonder? Given we're next off to Australia, maybe kangaroo sitting? Who knows! The adventure continues.
