Just another day in "America's paradise"

On the cover of the free glossy tourist magazine here, it bills itself as "your guide to America's paradise". Given some of the views we saw today - well I saw, more than Greg, as he does the driving - it may just justify that title. It certainly is a picturesque island with all its sandy coves and shades of blue and green.

Skyline Drive, a great viewpoint to see one of the many coves

Today we went to Hull Bay, which is along the north coast (Atlantic side), not far from our home. We took the long way there, but today our route was intentional, as opposed to getting lost, as we have done previously.

The view as we approached Hull Bay

It's a relatively small cove, but there are lots of things to do. There were lots of fishing boats, but no one actively fishing that we could see. Looking at the houses in the photo below, you might be able to imagine how steep the roads are ... but they're not the ones named "Suicide Hill" (see yesterday's post).

Greg with Frankie

This guy had no problems handling his windsurfer. He had it up in no time and easily managed frequently switching the sail from side to side. We were impressed.

An elderly man, in his wisdom, had found a better way to spend a day "at the office". Greg was fascinated by this man bringing a typical office chair to the beach.

We chatted with him a little, although it took lots of concentration to understand his Caribbean accent. Originally from St. Martin, he now lives in St. Thomas. Once we told him we were Canadians, he asked if we spoke French, which was his native language.

So, back to yesterday's tale of Suicide Hill. I don't think any photos can truly explain the incline and terrain of the approach roads down to our home; however, we'll try.

See Frankie and Greg in the open window?

Notice the orchid growing at the base of the palm tree. It blends a little into the door colouring in this photo, but it's clearer in the one below.

In the photo below, you'll see the final descent to our home. You can see the dark square inside the palms, which is the garage door of the property. Trust me though when I say that photos just don't do it justice! In the time I'm here, I won't get used to it, I'm convinced of that.

I'll end with some colour from the flowers we saw today. Below you'll see a close up of the orchid, as well a flower from a tree at the beach.

Just another day in "America's paradise".

  1. Is the hill steeper than the one in Coco beach?

  2. What a gorgeous place. Does this place have a tram that takes you to the top of a mountain? Seems we went on one someplace there... fantastic views? But then... with Suicide Hill, who needs a tram to see the sights?
