University life in the Virgin Islands

The University of the Virgin Islands has its main campus in Charlotte Amalie, the capital of St. Thomas. The university's 2800 students are on two campuses; two-thirds in St. Thomas and one-third in St. Croix. There isn't a campus on St. John, their sister island.

Again, see how steep the land rises up from the water?

This beach, at Brewers Bay, is across the street from the campus. Apparently students and faculty often go for a swim between classes. What a life of luxury!

This is the view from the student housing. Need I say more?

On Sunday, we went to an agricultural food fair on the university grounds. We walked around the enclosures of live animals; we saw lots of sheep, including some adorable mottled ones. Not the type that are good for our travels though :)

We stopped to buy an empanada from the lovely lady selling vegetarian food. A man came by and asked if the cold drinks were sweetened, to which she replied: absolutely not, sugar is poison! He quickly moved on.

We walked around the various displays of plants for sale. We're not used to seeing pineapple plants for outdoor planting.

And the variety of flowering cactus on sale was so colourful.

There were also fruit and vegetable stands, and some of the produce was certainly unknown to me. We didn't try anything new though as we already had lots of food at home.

We arrived home to this little guy sitting on our window sill. Part of life in a tropical climate. All is good.

  1. The veggie stands are one of our favorite places no matter where we're at. They can hold some real surprises!
