Texas sure is interesting!

Today we travelled a total of 490 miles (784 kms). We left Joplin, Missouri, crossed the state of Oklahoma, and stopped for the night in Amarillo, Texas.

Before we left home, I prepared a Trip Planner, which has been very helpful. We're on page 3 of 4 pages, but one of the entries on page 3 tells us to turn onto Interstate 40 and drive for 857 miles. We may be on page 3 for a while!

Most states have a welcome centre almost as soon as you cross into the state, but Texas seemed to be an exception. We didn't get any big Texan welcome, and had to wait quite a while before we found a welcome centre. Given that we rely on them for brochures to get discounted room rates, these are important to us. Then when I approached the centre, this is what I saw ...

I don't find the idea of meeting a rattlesnake very welcoming either!

Driving across this area of Texas we were fascinated by the miles and miles of flat, straight roads, and a speed limit of 75 mph (with most going faster than that, of course). There was very little of interest to us, until we saw the fields of cotton with bloom still on the plants. There were also lots of bales sitting in the fields, so we wondered why they were there so late in the season. Anyway, an interesting sight to see.

Oh, and our daytime high today was 57ºF, which was a nice increase compared to when we left home three days ago. It seemed even better when I saw the snowstorm warning for tomorrow for Niagara!

  1. I was just replying to your yesterday's post when this one arrived! I'm thrilled to be part of your journey virtually. I have a big North America map on the wall, which is perfect for marking your stops. Can't wait for the next update.
