A little bit of Denmark in Southern California

Today we saw african violets growing outdoors;
a good sign that we're in a warmer climate now!

We travelled from Santa Barbara to Solvang today, a journey of 35 miles. The majority of that journey (24 miles) was on the San Marcos Pass, which goes through the steep Santa Ynez Mountains. We travelled a range from sea level to 4800 feet above sea level, and back down to almost sea level again at Solvang. The San Marcos Pass is designated as a daylight-headlight highway, apparently because of frequent accidents. I don't have any photos of this road to share with you as I was too busy watching the road, and holding on at times!

Solvang was established more than 100 years ago, and is a Danish village in the heart of California. We arrived bright and early this morning, just as this lady was raising both flags.

We enjoyed a few hours strolling the streets and checking out the various stores. Even though sweet treats are my weakness, I managed to resist the many Danish bakeries!

Typical Danish architecture in the city

We chose not to travel back on the same route (once was enough for me!) and instead used the freeway back to our friend's home. We experienced our first Los Angeles heavy traffic congestion, which is pretty good considering the time we've been here. We stopped for a meal, and Greg saw this car and thought it warranted a photo.

Tomorrow will be a catch-up day of laundry and packing, as we're moving on again Friday ... but this time by sea, not by land. More about that tomorrow.
