Destin Harbor Boardwalk, Florida

Today we visited the Destin Harbor Boardwalk. We've passed by it a few times and seen lots of people there, so today we checked it out. Even with fewer spring-break students in town, and it being a weekday, there were still lots of people around. It was a good people-watching place.

The above photo was taken from the bridge as we approached Destin. The Harbour Boardwalk would be off to the left in this photo. So, below is a photo taken from the boardwalk, with the same bridge on the right. Got the picture now?

We enjoyed our afternoon, which included having lunch on the upper deck of a restaurant at the harbour front. We saw various boat tours, fishing tours, pirate ships, jet skis, water taxis ... you name it.

This magnolia tree is an outstanding landmark. Up close, the longer I looked at it, the more I saw various intricate carvings. In the enlargements below of each side of the tree, on the left you'll see one of the two rows of jumping dolphins. While doing the collage, only then did I notice on the right the body with flippers heading into the tree! It's difficult to do the work justice in this photo.

I took a photo of the plaque, to read later. I'll add it here, as I found the details fascinating. Such a labour of love!

While on the boardwalk we learned from a posted map that on the other side of the bridge, on our right when we travelled back, was Crab Island. We'd seen this before, but didn't recognize it as such. When you look at the photo below, you'll understand why. We'd seen people standing in the water there, next to their boats, so we realized it was very shallow. Apparently, what once was an island is now a sandbar, due to erosion over time from the sand.

See the people, standing near their boats?

Yet another good day in the Florida sunshine!
