Will Puerto Peñasco be the next Mexican cruise terminal?

The six-mile stretch between Cholla Bay and the original old port town of Rocky Point (Puerto Peñasco) is being in-filled by a bank of high-rise condominiums, as I understand aimed at the Arizonan and Californian tourism and second-home market. The high-rise condo sector is in stark contrast to the sleepy-town feel of Cholla Bay.

Part of the condo area, which has a beautiful golden-sand beachfront

The TV program, House Hunters International, recently did a segment on Rocky Point, searching for a second home for a couple from Phoenix, Arizona. The wife enjoys socializing and wants "amenities", whereas the husband admits to loving isolation. She points to "that mountain over there" (12:50 in the video recording) and makes it clear it's not a fit for her. Yep, I think she pointed to Cholla Bay! Here's the video:

Today we stopped for lunch at Wrecked at the Reef; a restaurant between the condos and Cholla Bay, geared to the American market. When I asked the waiter about what looked like a newly constructed breakwater in front of the bar, he explained that it was the early stages of an area being developed to accommodate cruise liners. It was supposedly slated to be completed sometime in 2015.

I question how this ongoing condo development, along with a cruise ship terminal, will affect Cholla Bay. The waiter agreed when I said that getting bigger is not always a good thing. The workers I've met here so far praise the peacefulness, safety, and small-town feel of the area. The waiter said "nothing ever happens here ... and that's a good thing!"
